Piper in his Mum’s own words. We have a beautiful 3 year old male English Springer Spaniel called Piper. He has lived with us and our cat in Leicester since he was 12 weeks old. We also have 2 children (aged 15 and 2) and we have had no concerns at all with him around them, even when the youngest was first born. Unfortunately, we both work full time and he has developed separation anxiety. This has now escalated to the point where he is hurting himself in his panic to find us, and most recently he has chewed a dog sized hole in our back UPVC door, breaking a couple of teeth in the process. It is with great sadness that we now need to find a more suitable home for him with a family who can give him the time that he deserves. He was born in November 2006 and is liver and white with a full tail. He is small for his breed and is not registered as a pedigree dog although his breeder provided details of his lineage which appears to show he is from a working/trials background. His inoculations are up to date, he is micro chipped and has been castrated. Piper lives inside the house, and although his bed is in the living room he sleeps outside our bedroom door when we are asleep. He is affectionate, loving and loyal. He is friendly to both people and other dogs, although he can be excitable when first greeted. He loves to run and chase around with other dogs (although he is a bit of a wimp if chased by more dominant dogs and will yelp briefly before continuing with the chase). He pulls slightly when walked on a lead, but will sit on command when waiting to cross roads. His recall is good, and he will walk and run to heel (he is one of my best running partners).
He will retrieve and loves to swim (indeed, he loves to retrieve from the water). He is good with our cat, but does like to chase birds and squirrels in the woods near our home and this is the one of the few times when he will bark. He has seen and we have never had any problems with him around cows, sheep, deer, horses, bikes and/or runners. He can sometimes be quite a nervous dog, mainly if there are strange noises around the house (such as creaks or bangs from next door), this may be in part linked to his separation anxiety. He does not like fireworks or vacuum cleaners. Ever since he first came to us as a pup he has chewed/mouthed his hip joint, whilst this looks odd and leaves a pink mark on his white fur, the vet has assured us that this is purely a habit and a form of comfort for him. Any toys that he is given need to be practically indestructible or removed immediately following play as he will chew them to destruction in a very short space of time (normally a matter of minutes). He has never chewed any of the children’s toys.
