Dogs that have been found new homes during this month

July 2010
PIPER
Piper in his Mum’s own words.

We have a beautiful 3 year old male English Springer Spaniel called Piper. He has lived with us and our cat in Leicester since he was 12 weeks old. We also have 2 children (aged 15 and 2) and we have had no concerns at all with him around them, even when the youngest was first born. Unfortunately, we both work full time and he has developed separation anxiety. This has now escalated to the point where he is hurting himself in his panic to find us, and most recently he has chewed a dog sized hole in our back UPVC door, breaking a couple of teeth in the process. It is with great sadness that we now need to find a more suitable home for him with a family who can give him the time that he deserves.

He was born in November 2006 and is liver and white with a full tail. He is small for his breed and is not registered as a pedigree dog although his breeder provided details of his lineage which appears to show he is from a working/trials background. His inoculations are up to date, he is micro chipped and has been castrated. Piper lives inside the house, and although his bed is in the living room he sleeps outside our bedroom door when we are asleep. He is affectionate, loving and loyal. He is friendly to both people and other dogs, although he can be excitable when first greeted. He loves to run and chase around with other dogs (although he is a bit of a wimp if chased by more dominant dogs and will yelp briefly before continuing with the chase). He pulls slightly when walked on a lead, but will sit on command when waiting to cross roads. His recall is good, and he will walk and run to heel (he is one of my best running partners).

He will retrieve and loves to swim (indeed, he loves to retrieve from the water). He is good with our cat, but does like to chase birds and squirrels in the woods near our home and this is the one of the few times when he will bark. He has seen and we have never had any problems with him around cows, sheep, deer, horses, bikes and/or runners. He can sometimes be quite a nervous dog, mainly if there are strange noises around the house (such as creaks or bangs from next door), this may be in part linked to his separation anxiety. He does not like fireworks or vacuum cleaners. Ever since he first came to us as a pup he has chewed/mouthed his hip joint, whilst this looks odd and leaves a pink mark on his white fur, the vet has assured us that this is purely a habit and a form of comfort for him. Any toys that he is given need to be practically indestructible or removed immediately following play as he will chew them to destruction in a very short space of time (normally a matter of minutes). He has never chewed any of the children’s toys.

BONNIE
Bonnie originally came to us with her Mum in 2008 and we re-homed them together. Sadly her Mother has since died and her owner is seriously ill in hospital so she is back with us one again looking for a home. She is an 8 year old Black and White spayed Springer female who is house trained and lovely natured. She is used to children but not very young ones and is ok with cats although she has not lived with a cat in the last 2 years. Both on and off the lead she is fairly well behaved; she does pull a bit but her recall is ok.  Bonnie is a bit over weight because her previous owner has been ill for some time and she has not been getting much if any exercise so she will need to start with steady exercise and build up as she loses weight and gain some muscle tone. She is with us in kennels and is on a sensible diet so that should help. Bonnie is a lovely affectionate girl who needs a good home as soon as possible.
JOEY

Joey is an 18 month old Black and White male Springer who is vaccinated; he is house trained and is allowed in the house but he is a trained working dog and lives outside in a kennel and run. He is fine with children from the age of 7 upwards and whilst not used to cats is accustomed to other dogs and livestock. He is very good both on the lead and is trained to the whistle, hand signals and word of mouth.

Joey travels well in the car and has never shown any aggression to anyone. He drops anything he has in his mouth to command and loves to play at chasing and fetching his ball.

Joey is looking for a home because his owner is now working long hours and is frequently away from home. Joey is used to an active working life and this is not fair to him

..
ELLA
Ella is a 9 year old Liver and White Springer female who is vaccinated, micro-chipped and house trained.  She is used to children from the age of 5 years upwards; she lives inside and is quite happy left for reasonable periods of time, she is not destructive or noisy. Ella is quite ok with other dogs but hates cats with a passion and chases birds (she lives on the coast so there are always lots on seagulls on the beach). She walks quite well on the lead and her recall is good she also enjoys travelling and loves her walks she particularly enjoys retrieving. Ella is good health but is sometimes prone to ear infections which are easily managed with drops and has a fatty lump on her chest which the Vet has seen and recommended that it be left alone.  Bella has some quite specific requirements where her food is concerned: at 8.00 am she has one round of toast with Bovril cut into soldiers at 4pm she has tinned food and biscuits and at 8 pm she has a couple of biscuits. We re-homed Ella (Bella as she was then) to her present home when she was 20 months old.  Unfortunately her owner is now going into rented accommodation and is unable to take her with him so she has come back to us to look for another home.
RILEY

Riley is a handsome 11 month old Black and White male Springer with a full length tail. He is house trained, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Riley has been in the same home since he was a tiny pup and is fine with his owners 10 year old child and friendly and outgoing with both people and other dogs: he has not however met cats or livestock he lives in a fairly urban area so will not have experienced the countryside and will almost certainly chase small fluffy and/or feathery things.

Riley is used to being left for reasonable periods of about 2 hours and is neither noisy nor destructive; he pulls on the lead but his recall is ok. Riley would benefit from training classes not just for training but to learn to socialise with other dogs as his experience is quite limited. He is fed twice a day and sleeps in the kitchen. Riley loves to get out for a run and to play retrieving his tennis ball. He is a typical active young Springer who is into everything and is full of fun. Riley’s owner has health problems and simply cannot give him the life he needs. He will make a lovely family dog and at this early age easily adapt to a change of home particularly if it involves more exercise and attention.
