Dogs that have been found new homes during this month

April 2010
MILLIE

Millie is a 16 month old Liver and White spayed female Springer who is from working stock. She is house trained, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. She is accustomed to living with children from the age of 5 upwards and gets on well with the family cat she is also friendly with other dogs but she has no experience around livestock. Millie is used to being left for around 4 hours and is left in a crate with the door open.  She has never been destructive or noisy. Millie pulls on the lead particularly when she is excited but her recall is good and she will respond to her name or a whistle, she endures rather than enjoys travelling and travels in the back behind a dog guard; she is improving but will still not get in the car unaided.

She loves to run and to play with the children but she is a very boisterous girl and coming as she does from field trial stock she really needs a very active home with a family who will be able to provide the amount of stimulation and exercise that a bright young working type needs. We don’t think her family really thought this through before taking her on and her Mum is finding her too much of a handful. Millie is a fabulous young dog but she needs both mental and physical activity and would probably thoroughly enjoy obedience, agility or flyball. Millie was bred to be a working dog and needs a family who understand her needs.
BRECK

Updated with new Information 13-04-2010

Breck is 17 months old and is a Liver and White neutered male Springer who is house trained and very boisterous. He does not live with children but has been fine with friends children when they have visited but can be a bit excitable and is inclined to knock young children over, so we would only consider a home with older children

Breck is used to being left alone for reasonable periods from 3 to 4 hours and is accustomed to going to work with his present owner where he is either left in a crate in the car or left tied up to the car with the back open so he can jump in if he wants. He is generally well behaved and will give back toys and things on command but like most young Springers he is full of life and can be very boisterous, he likes his toys and particularly his Nylabone chews.

When Breck came to us he was supposed to be suffering from Pancreatic Insufficiency Syndrome but extensive tests at the Vets have proved this is not to the case, in fact there is nothing physically wrong with him. He is fed on Arden Grange at the kennels and has been off his medication for a few weeks and he is absolutely fine.

Breck does sometimes shadow chase (he chases lights and reflections) we have had a qualified behaviourist and trainer out to assess him and he does not feel that he is too fixated on this and says that it may well diminish if he is given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Breck is a lovely young dog but he will need an experienced home with people who have the time to work with him and distract him if he begins to shadow chase.

CHARLIE

Charlie is a 20 month old Liver and White neutered male Springer who is house trained, vaccinated up to date and micro-chipped. His presently family have children from the age of 6 upwards so he is used to children. He has always been the only dog in his home but is friendly with dogs when he meets them out walking but he has not lived with a cat or had experience of livestock. He is used to being left for a couple of hours or so and has the run of the downstairs.

Charlie’s owners have unfortunately had little experience of dogs and have not managed to undertake any real basic training hence Charlie pulls like a train and as in all this time they have never  let him off the lead we have no idea if he would come back. Poor Charlie with his working Springer breeding is nearly climbing the walls and desperately needs to be allowed to run free.  He has 20 months worth of pent up energy and frustration to get rid of so he will either race round like a maniac when he is first let go or be so lacking in confidence that he will not know what to do. We suggest the new owners start with him on a long line until they have established a bit of control unless they have a very secure area. Like many Springers Charlie likes to carry things round in his mouth but has never been taught to give them back so he does not drop them. Charlie really needs an experienced family who will be able the put in the time and commitment to train and socialise him. He is quite nervous of strangers and has had little normal dog experience.

SCOOBY
(2006) Scooby is a 14 month old neutered Liver and White male Springer who is house trained and used to children of all ages.  He has always been the only dog in the home but is friendly but boisterous with other dogs when he meets them.  He is unused to cats but does not seem bothered about the neighbours cat when it appears.  He pulls quite badly so is walked on a halti but his recall is good Scooby travels well.  He is not really used to being left because his owner works from home.  Unfortunately his owner has to go into hospital and he is too strong and undisciplined for her Mother to manage him; he has already pulled her over twice.
(Scooby was homed by NWESSR in 2006 but his owners are emigrating and cannot take him with them so he has returned to us to look for a new home.  His manners have improved no end and he is now a mature family dog.)
CHARLIE

Charlie is the most handsome Liver and White Show Springer you can imagine.  He is 4 years old, house trained and is a delightful family dog.  He is great with kids, loves his walks but he does pull a bit, he comes back when called if allowed off his lead and travels well in the car. Charlie would not be suitable for a home with cats because he does chase them and is quite determined not to tolerate them in his space.

For the first year of his life his owner freely admits that she treated him like a baby and he went everywhere with her, he had the free run of the house and was able to follow her round all day.   He became very bonded with and dependant on her but things have changed and she has a two year old child.

She no longer wants Charlie with her everywhere because she says he is not hygienic he smells of dog and she doesn’t want her whole house smelling of dog and leaves dog hair everywhere so he is spending his days outside in a kennel where he is constantly barking and crying which is distressing him and annoying the neighbours and is now banned from going upstairs when he is in the house.

Poor Charlie does not understand why he is no longer the centre of his Mum’s world and is not coping with the situation and nor are his owners.  It is difficult to know if this is true separation anxiety or a result of the change in his relationship with his Mum.  He does not have the same bond with her partner who she says is not a doggy person.  He does seem to differentiate between being in his kennel whilst she is in the house and being in it when she goes out because she says when he hears her car start he goes quiet and does not start again until she returns.

Charlie is a big cuddly chap who likes nothing more than to snuggle up and craves human contact even if he is only sitting next to you leaning on you or laying with his head on your feet.  Charlie desperately needs a home where he will be part of the family and feel included and loved again because this arrangement is breaking his heart.

Show Springers by and large are much more people dogs than the working types and can be very clingy and need a close relationship with their people.  It is going to take Charlie some time to settle into a new home because his anxiety levels are sky high at the moment and a move will increase his anxiety and insecurity in the short term.

Charlie would suit a family where someone is home most of the time and will enjoy having the company of a big goofy spaniel or perhaps someone who is retired and is a keen dog owner and wants a real companion.

TED

Ted is a 5 month old Liver and White Springer dog pup bred from working stock and has been docked. He is vaccinated up to date and is micro-chipped and house trained. Ted is used to children from the age of 12 upwards but has no experience of living with cats or mixing with livestock. His owners have an elderly Border Terrier and Ted is making it’s life a misery by tormenting it to try and get it to play with him which is why he is looking for a home. His owner’s knew nothing about Springers and have realised that this Liver and White tornado is not the right dog for them or their family.

He is house trained and barks when he wants to go out and is used to being left for approx 4 hours at a time, he is not generally noisy or destructive but he is still a pup and does chew every so often. On the lead he pulls like a train and is just starting training classes in an attempt to rectify this, he travels well and prefers to be in the back of the car. He loves to carry things round in his mouth, a toy, sock or his ball.  For a young Springer he is remarkably well behaved and whilst he is a nightmare on the lead his recall is good and he will drop on command any item thrown for him the retrieve.
JESSIE

Jessie is a 5 year old Liver and White spayed female Springer who is house trained and micro-chipped. She has been in the same home since he was a pup and is used to children from 10 months upwards. Jessie also lives peacefully with the family and cat is good with other dogs but is not used to being around livestock.  She is fine being left for around 5 hours on occasion and is left the run of the downstairs of the house.

On the lead she pulls a bit but is generally well behaved and walks well off the lead with very good recall; she loves to travel in the car and enjoys her walks and playing ball. Jessie is a very people orientated dog who loves company and attention, she is a very gentle dog and is lovely with the children.

Her owners now have quite a large young family and do not feel that she is getting the attention she is used to so have asked us to find a home for her with a family who will have plenty of time for her.

JAKE

Jake is a 7 year old Liver and White male Springer dog who was bought as a present for his owners 65th birthday, his owner is now 72 and finds that he can no longer give Jake the exercise he needs. Jake is house trained and used to being left for reasonable periods. He is friendly with other dogs but has no experience of cats or livestock. Jake has not had much to do with children because his owner is elderly and there are no children in the family however there is no reason to suppose he would be a problem but because of this we would only home him with older children.

Like so many Springers on the lead his enthusiasm over rides his manners and he pulls but once he settles down he is not to bad and his recall is good. He enjoys travelling in the car and would play with his ball or his toys all day if he could. He is very playful and you need to be careful with small children because he knocks them over. Jake’s owner is beginning to feel the limitations of his age and feels Jake needs a young, fitter family.
