Ageing Springer! 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Me and my 12 year old Springer have just got back from a few days away in the Yorkshire dales. Muffins always been a very active Springer since pup! We've been on some fantastic walks this past week but I have noticed he's developed a small limp. When he's running in the long grass it doesn't seem to bother him that much, but on a hard surface its more visable. Also he's a little stiff when he's been resting and gets up.

I know he is getting on in years but was wondering if any one had any experience of this? Any medication that could help him? He is due at the vets in a few weeks so will mention it then...but have a feeling he will say old age!

Muffin is a treasured companion and friend and I'd like to make things abit more easier for him

Thanks

Firstly I would bring the Vets appointment forward if this is an injury rather than old age it needs treatment and even if it is old age he could be given pain relief and should not be left to suffer. Secondly if the Vet says it is arthritis Arden Grange make a very good Senior Dog Food (dried kibbles) which contain substances designed to help with this sort of problem. You could also try Green Lipped Muscle which I have had good results with. There are a number of remedies that may help but you need a diagnosis first.

Hope this helps

Hi, Muffin1, my old springer (11 - 12) also limps in his front leg if we walk him too far. We took him to vet last year, told it was old age arthritis, and were prescribed Metacam, which is ok and works, then someone told us to try Green Lipped Mussel from the local Health Food Shop, didnt think it would work but WOW, no more Metacam unless we go on a really big walk. One capsule a day broken into his food and that seems to do the job, worth trying for what it costs, about £8 from Holland & Barrett, but as Liz says Vet first. Took about 2 weeks to get into his system. Hope this helps.
